Metal Injection Molding (MIM) and Micro-MIM of Medical and Precision Industrial Devices:
Advanced Powder Products, Inc.

11:00AM –11:25AM

Abstract:
Using Metal Injection Molding (MIM), Advanced Powder Products, Inc. manufactures precision components and miniature devices for surgical and specialty industrial applications in a range of alloys including 17-4 PH and 300 series stainless steels, MP35N and F-75, copper, magnetic materials, heavy metals and nickel based super alloys . Ti and other non-standard alloy devices can be developed and manufactured on a case-by-case basis. APP uses its proprietary MIM technology to routinely produce components with feature sizes in the range of 0.001-0.003 inches (0.025-0.076 mm), tolerances of ± 0.5% and surface finishes less than 10 micro-inches. Through the use of ultra-precision tooling and enhanced process control, Advanced Powder Products' micro-MIM technology takes this process to the next level, achieving wall sections of 0.0015 inches, features sizes less than 0.001 inches, and individual device masses as low as 0.015 grams.

In addition to the medical sector, Advanced Powder Products provides materials R&D, prototyping, pilot-scale and high volume manufacturing services to clients in the industrial hardware, consumer goods, aerospace, and electronics markets Case studies on the manufacture of a number of these components, as well as an overview of the MIM and micro-MIM processes, will be given.

We will discuss:

  • MIM microMIM
  • tooling design
  • process capabilities
  • available materials
  • example components

Intended audience: Development, Engineering, Purchasing of metal components

About the speaker:
Donald Heaney, President and Director of Development
