Abstract:

With increased global competition in the plastics market, having accurate detailed calculations of mold tooling and part costs is imperative early in most program launches. OEM's - and not just in the automotive sector - are increasingly asking for cost breakdowns in pricing calculations and while only a small percentage of the quotations produced will actually become orders, every calculation must be detailed in order to be competitive or even considered. The large number of quotations usually required creates a problem of time and accuracy for all parties involved. More often than not, rushed quotations are lacking in accuracy and can potentially miss company profit margins when quoted inaccurately (too low) and then awarded based on this price. By accurate documentation of all the mold features in every calculation a strong basis for negotiation with the customer is enhanced and can likely be the deciding factor. Additionally, a systematic calculation provides a safe prediction of manufacturing times for the different phases of a mould build To properly deal with this market requirement, a computer aided system is your best tool for a systematic, quick and consistent procedure to calculate both mold and part costs. Cost Estimating software can be the key to solve this problem. Different kinds of software approaches on this subject can be made and have already been put into practise for injection moulds, pressure-die casting moulds and stamping dies.
