New Development in Biopolymers for Packaging

Abstract:

In recent years there has been an increasing concern about packaging waste and resource use. Consumer concern about the environment has caused a demand for greener products and packaging. The use of renewable sources and the reduction of carbon footprint are drivers for the use of biopolymers in packaging. Although in its infancy, biopolymer development, production and demand is expected to rise in the near future. Learn about the latest developments in biopolymers and how these materials are making consumer packaging more sustainable.

About the Speaker:
Carol Zweep, Manager Packaging & Nutrition Labelling Services, GFTC Business Unit–Technical Services
Carol Zweep has been at the Guelph Food Technology Centre since October 2002. She manages a department that performs both packaging and shelf life studies as well as reviewing and assisting in food regulatory and labelling projects. Carol has delivered courses, judged competitions, written trade journal articles in packaging and sustainable packaging. Prior to joining GFTC, Carol worked at Amcor PET Packaging for sixteen years in various roles ranging from managing a quality department, working in research and development to building the corporate technical center. Carol has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Queens University and a Master of Science degree from McMaster University. Carol is also a Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP).
