2012 MDEA Endorsing Organizations
The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition accepts the endorsement of professional and industry organizations whose members are involved in the design and development of medical technologies. Endorsing organizations supply expertise that assists in the development of the competition. Members of endorsing organizations may also serve on the independent multidisciplinary panel of jurors selected to judge each year’s entries.
Endorsing organizations of the MDEA program currently include the following: AdvaMed; the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering; the Healthcare Technology Foundation; the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society; the Medical Device Manufacturers Association; and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance. AdvaMed is a national trade association whose member companies produce medical devices, diagnostic products, and health information systems that are transforming healthcare through earlier disease detection, less-invasive procedures, and more-effective treatments. AdvaMed members produce nearly 90% of the healthcare technology purchased annually in the United States and more than 50% of the healthcare technology purchased annually around the world. AdvaMed members range from the largest to the smallest medical technology innovators and companies.
AdvaMed’s mission is to advocate a legal, regulatory, and economic climate that advances global healthcare by ensuring that patients can have access to the benefits of medical technology. The association represents industry interests in key overseas markets; works to ease regulatory burdens at the state, national, and international levels; and paves the way for innovation in healthcare technology. By using all the tools of modern political advocacy, AdvaMed works for responsible legislation to address industry concerns on Capitol Hill and for appropriate administrative policies affecting the industry in agencies such as FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering was founded to establish a clear and comprehensive identity for the field of medical and biological engineering, which is the bridge between the principles of engineering science and practice, and the problems and issues of biological and medical science and practice.
Practical engagement of medical and biological engineers ranges from the fields of clinical medicine and medical devices to food, agriculture, and environmental bioremediation. AIMBE seeks to serve and coordinate a broad constituency of medical and biological engineers, scientists, and practitioners; scientific and engineering societies; and academic departments and industries.

The Healthcare Technology Foundationwas founded in 2002 on the principle that achieving improvement in the safe use of healthcare technology requires diverse stakeholders to come together in order to utilize their collective knowledge on the design, use, integration and servicing of healthcare technology, systems and devices. In addition to industry, regulators, clinicians and clinical engineers, the public must be included as one of the stakeholders such that they are provided with the means to participate in and gain access to guidance on best practices and the safe use of healthcare technology both in clinical settings and at home.
The mission of HTF is to: "Improve healthcare delivery outcomes by promoting the development, application and support of safe and effective healthcare technologies."
Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, an interdisciplinary organization of professionals involved in the human factors field. The society’s mission is to promote the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds.
HFES furthers serious consideration of knowledge about the assignment of appropriate functions for humans and machines, whether people serve as operators, maintainers, or users in the system. It advocates systematic use of such knowledge to achieve compatibility in the design of interactive systems of people, machines, and environments to ensure their effectiveness, safety, and ease of performance.
The HFES Health Care Technical Group seeks to maximize the contributions of human factors and ergonomics to the effectiveness of medical systems and to quality of life for people who are functionally impaired.
Medical Device Manufacturers Association is a national trade association based in Washington, DC, that represents independent manufacturers of medical devices, diagnostic products, and healthcare information systems. Founded in 1992, MDMA seeks to improve the quality of patient care by encouraging the development of new medical technology and fostering the availability of beneficial innovative products.
MDMA is an effective and efficient organization that is extremely responsive to the needs of its members. The association’s staff and member companies have made their presence known in Washington. Fostering key relationships with Capitol Hill lawmakers and staffs at FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services enables MDMA to influence the policies that affect medical device innovators.

National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance fosters invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship in higher education as a way of creating innovative, commercially viable, and socially beneficial businesses and employment opportunities in the United States. The program was founded on the premise that invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship are essential components of the higher education curriculum and vital to the nation’s economic future. The NCIIA works with colleges and universities to build collaborative experiential learning programs that help nurture a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs with strong technical and business skills and the tools and intention to make the world a better place.
