Globe Medical Tech’s FreeVac Auto Retractable Safety Syringe Wins 2010 Medical Device Excellence Award
Houston, TX (April 9, 2010) - Globe Medical Tech, Inc (www.globemedtech.com) announced today that it has received a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award for the FreeVac Vacuum Operated Auto-Retractable Safety Syringe.
The FreeVac is a new patented safety syringe that comes with vacuum-operated automatic retractable technology. Designed with healthcare providers in mind, the FreeVac utilizes vacuum force to retract the used needle into the barrel of the syringe after an injection is administered. This syringe is intended to replace conventional syringes currently on the market and to reduce the possibility of needle stick injuries. Accidental needle stick injuries endanger the lives of medical professionals who may contract blood borne diseases such as HIV / AIDS, Hepatitis B and C. The features of the FreeVac simplify and enhance the safety of the current medicinal injection process used by all healthcare providers.
This is the second Medical Design Excellence Award for Globe Medical Tech. It also won in 2008 for the design and manufacturing work on the POWR Syringe. Globe is part of a small elite group; it is one of very few companies that have accomplished winning two MDEA awards in three years.
The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition (www.MDEAwards.com), organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles), is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.
A comprehensive review of the entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine, and diagnostics.
“Every engineer told me the same thing at the beginning of the design work: It is impossible to create such a strong and fast vacuum force in a device as small as a 3 cc syringe,” said Andy Hu, President of Globe Medical Tech. “However, we were able to overcome the design challenges after two years of effort. The 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award Winners will be honored at a presentation ceremony on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in New York City, in conjunction with the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition.
