Final Deadline Extended to February 8

Innovative products invited to enter the MDEA annual competition.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards, the industry's premier design awards competetion for the medical technology community, has extended its submissions deadline to Wednesday, February 8th, 2012. Honor and well-deserved recognition await the finalists and winners.

Entrants should use the Entry Materials Checklist for a complete list of all required and recommended materials when preparing new submissions. For an entry to be considered on time for the 2012 MDEA competition, all required and recommended entry materials (including entry fees, sample products, and product demo videos for juror review) must be received by UBM Canon no later than 5:00 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

MDEA Competition (1998-2012)

Transforming Healthcare – One Innovation at a Time

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition accepts entries from companies and individuals worldwide involved in the design, engineering, manufacture, or distribution of finished medical devices or medical packaging products. (Click here for complete eligibility requirements.) Accepted in ten medical product categories, entries are evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel of jurors with expertise in engineering, medicine, human factors, industrial design, manufacturing, and other design and healthcare-related fields.

The MDEA competition is a prestigious, publicity-charged program that provides companies with year-round opportunities to increase the distinction of their MDEA-finalist and winning products. The program recognizes the achievements of medical product manufacturers and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians—who are responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare.

Industry professionals are encouraged to review the information provided on this website and become involved in building recognition for medical product excellence, both in their own companies and industrywide. The following is an quick timeline of the events to come. (Click here to view a complete detailed timeline of events.)

  • The Jurors will convene in Los Angeles over Presidents Day weekend, February 18-20, to judge entries in the 2012 MDEA competition.
  • Finalists and 'Suppliers to Finalists' will be notified of their finalist status by February 28th.
  • Finalists in each of the ten categories will be publicly announced in the April issue of MD+DI (Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry) magazine.
  • Winners will then be announced on May 23 at 4:30 pm at a special presentation ceremony held in conjunction with the MD&M East event (www.MDMEast.com) at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The ceremony will be held at the Downtown Marriott hotel.
  • MDEA-winning products will be honored at the ceremony with Bronze-, Silver-, or Gold-level awards in each category. Also, one Gold-winning product will be awarded “Best-in-Show”.
  • The 2012 MDEA Lifetime Achievement Award winner will speak.

Medical Device Excellence: The Divine Detail, Heather Thompson, MD+DI (April 2011). When it comes to innovation, attention to detail may be the most important part of the design.
Products: the Orascoptic Freedom cordless LED headlamp for dentists and hygienists; the Compass interchangeable modular system; the JuggerKnot Soft Suture Anchor; the SpeediCath Compact Male intermittent catheter; and the PleuraFlow active tube clearance system.

Medical Device Design at a Crossroads, Brian Buntz, MD+DI (April 2011). The 2011 MDEA contest saw a strong showing from international entrants. Manufacturers in China and India, in particular, are finding novel ways to cut costs w/o affecting quality.
