UBM Canon's MDEA Team

The Medical Design Excellence Awards program is directed by an interdepartmental team of UBM Canon staff. Assignment of responsibilities for various parts of the program changes throughout the year, but generally follows the descriptions provided below. UBM Canon Medical Content Team

Shana LeonardShana Leonard—Shana joined UBM Canon's medical content team in 2005 and currently serves as executive editor of the UBM Canon MedTech Group. In this role, she oversees strategy implementation and content development for Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry (MD+DI), Medical Product Manufacturing News (MPMN), European Medical Device Technology (EMDT), and Qmed. She previously served as editor-in-chief of Medical Product Manufacturing News and For the MDEA program, Shana is responsible for coordinating editorial coverage of the awards across UBM Canon's medical brands. Jamie HartfordJamie Hartford—Jamie has worked for UBM Canon since April 2011 and currently serves as the managing editor for MD+DI. For the MDEA program, Jamie helps to manage the judging process and coordinates coverage of the awards for MD+DI. She holds a BS in journalism from Ohio University (Athens, OH). UBM Canon Conferences

Shana LeonardHayley Haggarty—Joined the UBM Canon team at the beginning of 2013, having relocated to Santa Monica from UBM’s head office in London where she worked for 3 years producing International large scale events in various industries including aviation, food ingredients and health & safety. She is currently the Content Development Manager for MD&M Conferences where she is responsible for researching with the industry to find out what keeps you up at night and how we can solve these challenges through our conference content. Before Joining UBM, Hayley was a Research Scientist for Cancer Research UK, and holds a BSc degree in Immunology from the University of Glasgow. She can be reached at

Jamie HartfordChiara Giorgi—Chiara is the operations manager for UBM Canon’s conference division. In this role, she oversees the organization and delivery of all North American Conferences. In January 2013, Chiara relocated to Santa Monica from UBM’s head office in London, where she worked for two years organizing conferences across the world in the fields of medical devices, pharmaceutical, food, aviation, cruise shipping, entertainment technology, crop production, sustainability, and construction.  Before joining UBM, Chiara ran a London-based pop up sample sale business called Boutique Sale. Stephen CorrickStephen Corrick—Corrick is Executive Vice-President/Managing Director of UBM Canon Publishing. For more than 20 years, Corrick has had experience in all the event, print and digital business-to-business Channels in North America, Europe and Asia. For the MDEA program, Corrick and his sales team are responsible for acquiring sponsorships and increasing program awareness in the supplier community. Through generating continued advertiser support, their efforts help the MDEA program expand its offerings to the healthcare and medical device communities worldwide. Corrick can be reached at

Elizabeth ReynoldsElizabeth Reynolds—Liz has worked for UBM Canon since 2008 and is the Marketing Director for UBM Canon’s Media Division. For the MDEA program, Liz assists with managing the ceremony, promotions, awards, and audiovisual presentations. She holds a BA in Communications and minor in Marketing from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Liz can be reached at

James CostiganJames Costigan—James has coordinated the MDEA competition since 2004, and is now the MDEA Marketing Manager. He is responsible for the call-for-entries, juror selection, judging weekend, finalist and winner notifications, invitations, ceremony planning, promotions, awards, and audiovisual presentations. James holds a BFA in Film & Television Studies + Production from the University of Notre Dame, and an MFA in Film Production from the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts. Dan Cutrone Dan Cutrone—Dan has been with UBM Canon since 1993. He started as Marketing Manager in its trade show division, where he was instrumental in creating many of the strategies and action plans that remain the core of the company’s successful attendance promotions. For two years, he served as the trade show customer and media relations manager, where he was responsible for public relations and was actively involved in exhibitor communications. Justin  CrossJustin Cross—Justin has worked for UBM Canon since November, 2013 as a senior marketer for the Conferences department. Donna LawrenceDonna Lawrence—Donna joined UBM Canon in 2007 in the trade show division. For the MDEA program, she assists in the creation of promotional materials and news releases, including the announcement of award-winning entries. Joey CruzJoey Cruz—Joey has worked in the trade show industry for nearly 25 years and joined the trade show division of UBM Canon in 2005 as senior operations coordinator. Joey holds a certification in exposition management from the International Association for Exposition Management. He is involved with hotel, budget, and operational issues in support of the MDEA program. Joey can be reached at

Katie TirschelKatie Tirschel—Katie joined UBM Canon in 2007 as operations coordinator in the trade show division. For the MDEA program, she helps coordinate the hotel and travel logistics for the MDEA judging as well as other operational duties involved with MDEA events.
